Scholar of the Month Program

Purpose

The purpose of the Scholar of the Month Program is to identify students of color that demonstrate strong academic promise currently enrolled in grades 9 – 12 that live in City of Roanoke, Salem City, Roanoke County, Montgomery County, City of Radford City or Pulaski County.  ColorsVA magazine, in partnership with Virginia Tech and Radford University, sponsor this initiative to highlight the efforts of academically gifted and talented students.  Both Virginia Tech and Radford University, respectively, use this Program as a pipeline recruitment strategy to enhance diversity on their respective campuses.    

Nomination Criteria

  1. Nominee must be a student of color (i.e., African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asia American/Pacific Islander, etc.)
  2. Must be currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12 at a high school in City of Roanoke, Salem City, Roanoke County, Montgomery County, City of Radford City or Pulaski County
  3. Must possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  4. Must demonstrate leadership potential as exhibited through co-curricular, extra-curricular, community, or religious activities.

Who Can Submit a Nomination

Nominations for Scholar of the Month may be submitted by a teacher, principal, guidance counselor, School Board member, clergy, or community leader

Benefits to Scholar of the Mont

  • Student will be featured in current month’s issue of ColorsVA magazine.
  • Student will receive a plaque from ColorsVA Magazine with the Scholar of the Month designation.
  • Scholar is featured during ColorsVA segment on Living Local the 3rd Tuesday
  • Scholar will be considered for the Scholar of the Year award.  This award is a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00 commemorating the civic work and community involvement of Mrs. Evangeline Jeffrey who for many years served as the President of the Roanoke Branch of the NAACP.    

Who Judges Nomination?

Nominations for Scholar of the Month will be judged by the publisher, associate publisher, editor and ColorsVA staff

Nomination deadline

Nominations for the Scholar of the Month are accepted beginning August 15, 2019 until March 30, 2020. Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis.  8 students are selected throughout the academic year and featured October – May.
