March is International Women’s Month. This year’s campaign theme and hashtag is “Balance for Better”. The theme creates space for change and progression, not just in one area but many. There are so many important and contributing factors to how the overall support of women will make the world a better place. Women give life and being to all of us, if not god, she is the closest thing. The woman is the first home we are aware of, who we turn to in hunger, sickness, or guidance. There would be no man without woman, not only for birth but as well as sustaining life. The cliché phrase “There is a great woman behind every great man” has always been a hard fact that can be overlooked by power and the silencing of women’s voices.
Women do not belong in the kitchen or at home with the kids; not if they don’t want to be. Women have made great strides in history all over the world. Some women like Michelle Obama, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Sheryl Sandberg, we may know of, while others are new to our knowledge. It is very important that we support ALL WOMEN. This support can be uncomfortable and requires a change for people living in American standards of society. However, as we celebrate and honor present women making their marks in history, we must recognize the plethora of women who left their footsteps for us to fill and create new one for the women in tow.
Some ways to support women:
- Listen to women’s stories and experiences
- Mentor women and girls
- Invest/Buy from women’s business owners
- Congratulate and give credit where it is due
- Give and advocate for equal pay
- Stand up for equality and fairness in private and public spaces
- Understand celebrating women does not impact manhood
- Call out sexism and other men’s bad behavior in private and public spaces
- Understand silence is not supportive
- Research and learn about the impact women have made all over the world
